Chefchaouen is the safest-feeling of the big Morocco cities. Most hostels offer female dorms, and the medina is safe to walk at any hour.

Look for hostels that organize Akchour waterfall day-trips — they arrange the grand-taxi, guide, and pack lunches. Usually €15–20 per person including transport.

When to book
Weekends fill with day-trippers from Tangier — book Fri/Sat 3+ weeks ahead. Mid-week is almost always available.
