Fes hostels: what to expect
Fes hostels are different from Marrakech’s — smaller, more intimate, usually set inside restored riads with tiled courtyards and rooftop terraces. Party hostels exist but the city’s vibe leans quieter and more cultural.
Best for social backpackers
Rooftop hostels clustered near Bab Boujloud (the Blue Gate) are the most social. Dorm beds €9–14, breakfast usually included, evening rooftop dinners bring everyone together. Good for solo travellers who want to meet people without committing to a full party scene.
Best for quiet / cultural travellers
Deep-medina riad hostels near the Karaouine mosque or Talaa Kebira are stunning architecturally and very quiet at night. 6–10 beds max, no nightlife, perfect for reading and decompressing. €10–16.
Best for solo female travellers
Look for women-owned riads or hostels with female-only dorms and a 24/7 front desk. Pickup service from the medina gate matters here — Fes el-Bali is famously confusing at night.
Budget tiers
- Under €10/night: basic dorm in the medina, shared bathroom, breakfast extra.
- €10–16: restored-riad hostels with good breakfast, rooftop, female dorms.
- €18–25: boutique-hostel hybrid, private rooms, tours desk, AC.
Booking tips
Book at least a week ahead in April–May and October. Always ask for a pickup from Bab Boujloud or the train station — medina alleys are unmarked and GPS is unreliable. Read reviews for “noise at night” if you’re a light sleeper (mosque call to prayer starts around 5am).
