Book hostels in Ait Benhaddou

UNESCO earthen ksar on a caravan route. Gladiator, GoT and Mummy filmed here.

Ait Benhaddou is a fortified earthen village — a ksar — stacked on a hillside above a river, 30km from Ouarzazate. It's been on the UNESCO list since 1987 and appears in Gladiator, Game of Thrones, The Mummy and Prince of Persia. Most people day-trip here from Marrakech but staying overnight lets you see the ksar empty at golden hour.

Highlights

  • Climbing to the agadir granary at the top of the ksar
  • Sunset from across the river
  • Tea on a rooftop café facing the ksar
  • Guided walk through still-inhabited earthen houses
  • Day trip combining Ouarzazate's film studios

Best for

  • UNESCO collectors
  • Film-location fans
  • Overnight break on Marrakech–Sahara route
  • Photographers chasing golden hour

When to visit

March–May and October–November are the sweet spot: 18–28°C days and clear skies. July–August hit 40°C+ in the valley. Winter can drop to near-freezing overnight — bring layers.

Budget

Hostels are scarce — expect €10–18 dorm or €25–35 basic room in a kasbah guesthouse. Tajine in a ksar rooftop café: €5–8. Local guide through the ksar: €5 tip. A 1-night stop costs €30–40 all-in.

Getting there

From Marrakech: 4h by grand taxi or the Marrakech–Ouarzazate CTM bus, then 30 min to the ksar. From Ouarzazate: 30 min, €3 grand taxi. Most hostel tours from Marrakech stop here on the way to the desert.

Safety

Very safe small village. Only caution: the river crossing can flood suddenly after heavy mountain rain. A sandbag bridge and stepping stones exist; skip if the river is brown and fast.

Where to stay — neighborhoods

Not all hostels are in the same part of town. Here’s how each area compares.

Old Ksar (UNESCO side)

Best for: Photos, atmosphere, history

The photogenic hillside ksar itself. A handful of earthen kasbah guesthouses inside; basic but unforgettable.

New village (across the river)

Best for: Comfort, parking, restaurants

Modern side where most tour buses stop and most mid-range hostels sit. Better facilities, same view, 10 min walk to the ksar.

Tips from us

  • Stay overnight — the day-tour coaches leave by 5pm and you get the ksar nearly alone.
  • Cross the river to the old ksar side rather than the new village where most hotels are.
  • Hire a local guide at the entrance for €5 — the history is more interesting than doing it alone.
  • The nearby Atlas Film Studios at Ouarzazate are worth a half-day if you liked Gladiator.
  • Bring cash — card payments rarely work in the valley.
