Book hostels in El Jadida

Portuguese cistern, Atlantic beach, a relaxed UNESCO port 1h from Casa.

El Jadida is a beach city 100km south of Casablanca, built around a Portuguese fortress from 1506 (UNESCO-listed). The star attraction is the underground cistern — the atmospheric hall where Orson Welles shot scenes of Othello. Beyond the old town, it's a working Moroccan beach city, packed with locals in summer and quiet the rest of the year.

Highlights

  • The Portuguese Cistern (the photo everyone posts)
  • Walking the star-shaped ramparts at sunset
  • Manueline-style Church of the Assumption
  • A long sandy beach right next to the medina
  • Weekend souk at nearby Azemmour village

Best for

  • Weekend from Casablanca
  • UNESCO and Portuguese-history fans
  • Beach + culture combos
  • Budget travellers dodging Essaouira prices

When to visit

June–September for warm sea and full beach vibe. April–May and October for pleasant weather with few crowds. Winter is grey with Atlantic rain but hostels drop to their cheapest.

Budget

Dorm beds €9–14. Fish tajine near the port: €4–6. Cistern entry: €2. A full day here: €18–25. Much cheaper than Essaouira for similar coastal vibes.

Getting there

Train from Casablanca: 1h30, €4. Bus: 1h45, €3. From Marrakech: 3h30 direct bus, €8. Mohammed V airport (Casa) is the closest, 1h15 by train with a change.

Safety

Safe, relaxed, minimal hassle. Beach is fine to walk at night near the old town. Busier on summer weekends when Casablanca empties out.

Where to stay — neighborhoods

Not all hostels are in the same part of town. Here’s how each area compares.

Cité Portugaise

Best for: Cistern, ramparts, photo spots

The walled UNESCO old town. Cistern, cathedral and a maze of Portuguese streets. A handful of guesthouses; most hostels are outside.

Corniche / Beach

Best for: Budget hostels, beach access

The seafront boulevard north of the old town with most hostels, cafés, and a long sandy beach. Walk to the cistern in 10 min.

Tips from us

  • Go to the cistern mid-morning for the best light ray through the roof hole.
  • The beach right by the medina is crowded — walk 1km north for calmer sand.
  • Combine with Azemmour (10km away) — a hidden whitewashed medina with no tourists.
  • Friday-Saturday summer nights get very lively at the Corniche cafés.
  • Fresh oysters come from nearby Oualidia — a 1h drive south.
