Book hostels in Imlil

Berber trekking base at 1740m, gateway to Mount Toubkal.

Imlil is a tiny Berber village at 1740m in the High Atlas, 90 minutes from Marrakech, and the launching point for climbing Mount Toubkal (4167m — the highest peak in North Africa). Walnut orchards, terraced apple farms, and a single main street lined with mountain-guide offices and tea houses. Most travellers stay 2–4 nights to trek up to the Toubkal refuge and back.

Highlights

  • Mount Toubkal 2-day trek (4167m summit)
  • Day hike to Aroumd Berber village
  • Valley walk to Sidi Chamharouch shrine
  • Traditional tagine in a mountain guesthouse
  • Snow on the peaks (December–April)

Best for

  • Hikers and trekkers (all levels)
  • Toubkal summit seekers
  • Escape from Marrakech heat
  • Rural mountain immersion

When to visit

April–June and September–October for the best trekking conditions. Toubkal summit attempts without technical gear are June–September only. Winter brings snow and the summit requires crampons and a guide.

Budget

Dorm beds €10–15, gîte rooms €20–30. Toubkal 2-day guided trek with mule, guide, refuge and meals: €150–220. Day hike guide (required to Toubkal area): €40. A tea: €1. Meal at a guesthouse: €7–10.

Getting there

Grand taxi from Marrakech's Bab Rob station: 1h30, €5 shared or €35 private. Pre-arranged hostel transfer: €25. No direct bus. You'll need to switch taxis at Asni for the final 17km.

Safety

Very safe village. Note: in 2018 two Scandinavian hikers were killed near Imlil by extremists. The Moroccan government responded with heavy security and mandatory licensed guides for all Toubkal hikes. Since then incidents have been zero. Never hike Toubkal area without a licensed guide.

Where to stay — neighborhoods

Not all hostels are in the same part of town. Here’s how each area compares.

Imlil village centre

Best for: Hostels, guide offices, meals

The single main street with most hostels and all the trekking offices. Everything walkable in 10 minutes.

Aroumd / Armed

Best for: Slower pace, traditional gîtes

A 45-min walk uphill from Imlil — smaller Berber village perched on a stone mound. Fewer beds, more quiet, better views.

Tips from us

  • Book your Toubkal guide through your hostel — negotiated rates and reputable locals.
  • Altitude kicks in at the refuge (3207m). Hydrate well and skip alcohol the night before.
  • Rent a down jacket in Imlil for €5/day rather than carrying one from home.
  • The village has no ATM — bring cash from Marrakech.
  • Wi-Fi works but is slow; expect a digital detox.
