Book hostels in Imsouane

Longest right-hand wave in Africa, fishing harbour and a slowly rebuilding village.

Imsouane is a small fishing village halfway between Agadir and Essaouira, famous worldwide for the Bay — a 600m mellow right that is one of the longest waves in Africa. After a 2024 demolition cleared parts of the seafront, the village is rebuilding slowly with new hostels, surf camps and fish cafés. The point still fires. The lighthouse, the harbour and the sunset are unchanged.

Highlights

  • Surfing The Bay — 600m of mellow right
  • Fresh fish lunch on the harbour wall
  • Sunset from the lighthouse cliff
  • Cathedral Point right reef (advanced)
  • Berber market in town every Tuesday

Best for

  • Longboarders
  • Beginner & intermediate surfers
  • Slow travellers
  • Surf-photo collectors

When to visit

October–April for the Bay's most consistent rights. May–September is small but warm — ideal for learning. Wind picks up after 11am most days; surf at dawn.

Budget

Dorm: €10–14. Surf-camp room: €22–35. Fish tagine on the port: €5–8. Surfboard rental: €8/day. Group lesson: €20. 1-week surf-camp package: €250–380.

Getting there

From Agadir: 2h via grand taxi (€10) or surf-camp shuttle. From Essaouira: 1.5h grand taxi (€8). No direct CTM bus — you must change in Tamri or take a private shuttle.

Safety

Tiny safe village. Surf can get crowded — observe priority and don't drop in. Reconstruction work means dust and machinery near the seafront in 2026; book inland or up-the-hill rooms for quiet. No ATM in village; bring cash from Agadir or Essaouira.

Where to stay — neighborhoods

Not all hostels are in the same part of town. Here’s how each area compares.

Aftas / The Bay

Best for: Surfers, beach access

South side of the village facing the famous Bay. Most surf camps and fish cafés are here.

Cathedral / lighthouse hill

Best for: Quiet, view, advanced surfers

Cliff above the harbour with the lighthouse and Cathedral Point reef. Quieter, big views, walking distance to the harbour.

Tips from us

  • Surf the Bay at dawn — wind kills it after 11am.
  • Hike up to the lighthouse for the best surf-photo angle.
  • Some surf camps still operate from Aftas-side temporary structures post-demolition — check before booking.
  • Buy fish straight off the boats around 4pm when they return.
  • If you have a license, rent a car in Agadir — public transport is painful here.
