Book hostels in Mirleft

Cliffside Atlantic village, empty surf coves and pink dawns 40km north of Sidi Ifni.

Mirleft is a tiny clifftop village on Morocco's Atlantic coast, halfway between Tiznit and Sidi Ifni. The pink-and-blue main street is barely 200m long; everything else is wild beaches reached by dirt tracks. It draws longboard surfers, paragliders and burnt-out city people who came for three nights and stayed three weeks.

Highlights

  • Plage Imin Tourga and Aftas — empty surf coves at sunset
  • Paragliding off the cliffs above Plage Sauvage
  • Coffee on a rooftop above the pink main street
  • Hammam in a renovated Spanish-era house
  • Half-day to Legzira arch (40 min south)

Best for

  • Slow travellers
  • Longboard surfers
  • Paragliders
  • Digital nomads chasing cheap coastal stays

When to visit

September–April for surf and 18–24°C days. May–August is hot inland but Mirleft stays mild thanks to the Atlantic. Avoid August weekends — Moroccan families fill up beach campsites.

Budget

Dorm bed: €8–12. Private room in a guesthouse: €18–28. Tajine in a beach café: €4–6. Surfboard rental: €8/day. A relaxed week costs around €120–180 all-in.

Getting there

From Agadir: 3h grand taxi via Tiznit (~€10). From Sidi Ifni: 40 min, €3 grand taxi. No buses stop in Mirleft itself — get off at Tiznit or Sidi Ifni and switch.

Safety

Very safe village. Watch the cliff edges (no railings) and the rip currents on Plage Sauvage. Some beach access tracks need 4×4 in winter. Cash only — the nearest ATM is in Sidi Ifni or Tiznit.

Where to stay — neighborhoods

Not all hostels are in the same part of town. Here’s how each area compares.

Pink main street

Best for: Cafés, hostels, easy access

The 200m strip where every café, surf shop and most hostels are. Walking distance to two beaches.

Plage Aftas

Best for: Surfers wanting beach-front

Sandy bay 1km north of the village with a few bungalow guesthouses right on the beach. Best beginner waves.

Tips from us

  • Stay at least 4 nights — one night is wasted travel time.
  • Sunset point is the cliff above Plage Imin Tourga, 10 min walk south.
  • Argan oil from the women's co-op outside town beats anything sold to tourists.
  • Eat camel tajine once — Mirleft is one of the few places it's a local dish, not a gimmick.
  • Bring a windbreaker; Atlantic wind picks up after 3pm year-round.
