Book hostels in Tetouan

Andalusian medina, mountains to sea, the quietest UNESCO town in Morocco.

Tetouan sits between the Rif Mountains and the Mediterranean, 40 minutes inland from Martil beach. Its UNESCO-listed medina is the most intact in Morocco — tiny, whitewashed, and built by Andalusian refugees who fled Spain in the 15th century. Spanish is the second language (not French) and the vibe is noticeably calmer than Fes or Marrakech.

Highlights

  • The compact whitewashed UNESCO medina
  • Feddan Park and the royal palace gate
  • Museum of Modern Art
  • Day trip to Martil or Cabo Negro beaches
  • Andalusian-style mosaics and riads

Best for

  • Spanish speakers
  • UNESCO-medina fans who hate crowds
  • Pair with Chefchaouen (1h)
  • Beach-and-medina combos

When to visit

April–June and September–October for warm days and cool nights. July–August brings Spanish tourists and beach crowds at Martil. Winter is mild (15°C days) but brief afternoon rain is common.

Budget

Dorm beds €7–12. Tajine in the medina: €3–4. Shared taxi to Martil: €1. Day total: €15–20. Noticeably cheaper than Tangier or Chefchaouen.

Getting there

CTM bus from Tangier: 1h15, €3. From Chefchaouen: 1h, €3. From Fes: 5h direct. The Tangier Ibn Battouta airport is closest (50 min by grand taxi, €15 shared).

Safety

Very safe by Moroccan standards. Some hassle in the medina but far less than Fes or Marrakech. Areas around the bus station feel rougher at night — use a taxi.

Where to stay — neighborhoods

Not all hostels are in the same part of town. Here’s how each area compares.

Medina (UNESCO)

Best for: Andalusian alleys, hostels, food

The walled white old town. Most hostels, the best tajines, and the UNESCO heart of Tetouan. Walk it end to end in 30 minutes.

Ensanche (Spanish new town)

Best for: Cafés, modern comfort

The Art Deco grid built under the Spanish protectorate. Wide avenues, good coffee, fewer hostels but easier for first-timers overwhelmed by medinas.

Tips from us

  • Try Spanish first — many locals speak it better than French.
  • Feddan Park at golden hour is the best free view in town.
  • The medina shuts down for lunch (1–3pm). Eat then or walk the royal gate area.
  • Pair with Chefchaouen and Tangier for a 4-day northern loop.
  • Stay inside the medina, not the new town — the medina is where the charm lives.
