Overview

This is the backbone route used by hostels and local guides across Morocco. You’ll see the imperial medinas, the Sahara dunes, the blue-painted Rif and the Atlantic coast. Total budget hostels-only: $420–$550 USD for food, beds, transport and one desert tour.

Days 1–3: Marrakech

Land in Marrakech, drop into a rooftop hostel near Djemaa el-Fna. Day 1 is just wandering — souks, gardens, a mint tea. Day 2, take a guided half-day medina walk (free from most hostels) then Jardin Majorelle. Day 3, day-trip into the Agafay desert or Ourika valley.

Days 4–6: Sahara via the Atlas

Join a 3-day desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga ($90–$130). You’ll cross Tizi n’Tichka pass, see Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate, sleep in Dades, then camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes for a Berber camp night. Life-list stuff.

Days 7–8: Fes

Supratours bus Merzouga → Fes (9 hours) or backtrack via Marrakech. Fes el-Bali is the oldest still-functioning medieval city on earth — take a paid guide (150–200 dirhams for half a day), you’ll get more from it.

Days 9–10: Chefchaouen

CTM Fes → Chefchaouen (4 hours). Two nights in the blue city. Hike to the Spanish Mosque viewpoint at sunset, do the Akchour waterfall day hike, eat goat cheese. Chill.

Days 11–12: Tangier

Grand taxi or bus Chefchaouen → Tangier. Medina wander, Cap Spartel, strait views toward Spain. Spend one night at a Kasbah hostel.

Days 13–14: Essaouira

Fly or train-bus Tangier → Essaouira via Casablanca. Two nights on the windy Atlantic — beachfront riads, fresh grilled sardines, a surf lesson if the wind behaves. Then fly out of Essaouira or take Supratours back to Marrakech.
