Book hostels in Merzouga
Gateway to the Sahara. Desert camps, camel treks, endless stars.
Merzouga sits at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes — the Morocco you came here for. Most travellers arrive on a 2- or 3-day desert tour from Marrakech or Fes, stay a night at a desert camp, and swear they'll come back. Hostels in the village are simple, warm, and usually bookable together with the full desert experience.
Highlights
- Camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes
- Night at a Berber desert camp
- Sandboarding the big dune
- 4x4 desert tour to fossil sites
- Sunrise over the dunes (unmissable)
Best for
- Bucket-list travellers
- Photographers
- Adventure and 4x4 fans
- Travellers coming off the Marrakech–Fes desert loop
When to visit
October–April. Summer is brutal (45°C+ daytime). The sweet spot is November–March, when days are warm and nights are crisp with clear star-filled skies. Avoid August entirely.
Budget
Most visitors pay for a package: €80–150 gets you 2-nights/3-days from Marrakech including transport, desert camp, camel trek, meals. DIY is cheaper but logistics are real. The desert camp itself runs €25–60/person/night.
Getting there
No airport. 10h drive from Marrakech or Fes (gorgeous route through Atlas mountains). Most hostels book a shared minibus tour that picks up at your Marrakech/Fes hostel. Driving yourself is possible but long.
Safety
Very safe, but sun + isolation are the real risks. Follow your guide's instructions on camel treks, drink more water than you think, and never wander off into the dunes alone.
Where to stay — neighborhoods
Not all hostels are in the same part of town. Here’s how each area compares.
Merzouga village
Best for: Budget hostels, village life, dune access
The small village closest to the big Erg Chebbi dunes. Basic hostels and cafés — most travellers spend just a night here before heading into the desert.
Hassi Labied
Best for: Mid-range riads, palmeraie base
Quieter oasis village a few km from Merzouga. More charming riads, a palm grove feel and easy access to the dunes from the north side.
Desert camps in Erg Chebbi
Best for: Stargazing, camel sunrise, the full desert night
Not a neighborhood in the traditional sense — tented camps deep in the dunes. Book the standard or luxury tier for a night that's unforgettable even at basic tier.
Tips from us
- A scarf / cheche is essential — dust and sun protection.
- Fill your phone with downloaded music/podcasts; there's patchy signal at camps.
- Bring a headlamp for the camp after dark.
- Sunrise over the dunes is worth the 5:30am wake-up; sunset less dramatic.
- Tip the camel guide €2–4 — they genuinely make peanuts.
