Essaouira hostels overview

Essaouira has three distinct hostel zones — medina (inside the walls), beachfront promenade, and the wind-sports villages 30 minutes south (Sidi Kaouki, Moulay Bouzerktoun). Each has a very different vibe.

Best for culture / first-timers

Medina riad-hostels inside the Portuguese walls. €10–16 dorm, blue shutters, rooftop with Atlantic views, breakfast often included. You’re 5 minutes from every souk, every restaurant, and the port.

Best for surfers and kitesurfers

Surf hostels in Sidi Kaouki (25 min south) or Moulay Bouzerktoun (30 min north for kite). Package deals from €150 for 5 nights with board rental. Very different scene: beach-dog hostels, bonfires, rotating long-stay crowd.

Best for digital nomads

Beachfront apartment-hostels with co-working space and reliable wifi. €18–28 for a dorm, monthly rates available. Quieter than the medina, right on the promenade.

Best for solo female travellers

Essaouira is probably Morocco’s most relaxed medium-size city for solo women. Medina riad-hostels with female dorms are plentiful; the surf villages are also welcoming.

Price tiers

  • €9–14: basic medina dorm, rooftop, breakfast.
  • €15–22: beach-adjacent surf hostel with board rental.
  • €25–35: boutique riad-hostel or apartment-hostel.

Booking tip

Gnaoua World Music Festival (third week of June) books out 2+ months ahead and doubles prices. Off-festival summer weekends are also busy (Moroccan domestic tourism).
