Book hostels in Taghazout

Morocco's surf capital. Point breaks, yoga and vegan smoothies.

Taghazout is a fishing-village-turned-surf-mecca on the Atlantic coast 30 minutes north of Agadir. Long-period swells, warm water most of the year, 10+ named surf breaks, and the biggest concentration of backpacker surf hostels in Morocco. If you want a chill beach-bum base with board rentals and yoga, this is the spot.

Highlights

  • Anchor Point (right-hand pointbreak)
  • Panorama / Banana Beach for beginners
  • Sunset drumming on the beach
  • Paradise Valley day trip
  • Argan oil cooperatives nearby

Best for

  • Surfers (all levels, but shines for intermediates)
  • Long-stay digital nomads
  • Yoga + wellness travellers
  • Couples and solo travellers on a chill week

When to visit

Surf season is September to April β€” consistent swell, offshore winds, water 17–21Β°C (wetsuit required). Summer has smaller waves but warmer water and more crowds. Avoid the wettest winter weeks unless you're a dedicated surfer.

Budget

Surf hostel dorm with breakfast: €12–20. Surf lesson with board + wetsuit: €20–30. 5-day surf-and-yoga package: €180–300. Tajine at the village: €4–6. Week in Taghazout with lessons: €300–400.

Getting there

Agadir Al Massira Airport (AGA) is 40 min away β€” most surf hostels offer pickup for €10–15. From Marrakech: 3h bus to Agadir, then local bus 30/31 or grand-taxi for €3. From Essaouira: 4h bus.

Safety

Very safe, super relaxed. Main risks are surf-related: big swell days, rocks, and beginners dropping in. The village is small enough to walk day and night. Solo women report one of the chillest vibes in Morocco.

Where to stay β€” neighborhoods

Not all hostels are in the same part of town. Here’s how each area compares.

Taghazout village

Best for: Walking to Anchor Point, cafΓ©s, hostels

The original fishing village. Most surf hostels, cafΓ©s, board rentals. Walk 15 minutes north and you're at Anchor Point.

Tamraght

Best for: Beginner surf, cheaper, family feel

2 km south of Taghazout. Smaller, more Moroccan-feeling, walking distance to Banana and Devil's Rock β€” ideal if you're just learning.

Aourir (Banana Village)

Best for: Longer stays, apartments, Agadir proximity

Halfway between Agadir and Taghazout. Better supermarkets, cheaper long-stay apartments, but less surf-hostel scene.

Tips from us

  • Book surf hostels 2+ weeks ahead in winter high season β€” they fill fast.
  • Tamraght (2 km south) is slightly cheaper and more local β€” worth considering.
  • Most surf schools include transport to the best break of the day.
  • Wetsuit thickness: 3/2 for autumn, 4/3 for winter.
  • Don't forget Paradise Valley for a non-surf day β€” freshwater pools in a palm canyon.
