Why Morocco for surf?
Consistent Atlantic swell, warm-ish water year-round (17–22°C), empty lineups outside peak, and hostel-dorms right on the beach for $12. Europe’s nearest serious surf destination.
Taghazout — the main hub
Small fishing village 30 minutes north of Agadir airport. 6 quality breaks within a 10km stretch:
- Anchor Point — the legend. Long right-hand point break, works on west swells, intermediate+.
- Killers — bigger, faster right reef. Experienced only. When Anchor is 6ft, Killers is 10ft.
- La Source — softer right, good for intermediates.
- Mysteries — fickle but epic right barrel when it’s on.
- Panorama — friendly beach break next to town, beginners fine here.
- Hash Point — named you-know-why. Easy right, friendly crowd.
Base yourself in a surf hostel with a 7am dawn-patrol van: $25–40/night including board and van, $50–70 with lessons.
Imsouane — the one-hour right
Two-hour drive north of Taghazout. Home to "The Bay" — rideable wave up to 800m long on the right day. Mellower crowd than Taghazout, perfect for intermediates. Smaller village, fewer hostels — book ahead in peak season (October–February).
Essaouira — wind and beginners
Beach breaks north and south of town. Very windy (hence the kitesurf scene) but the mornings usually have clean 3–5ft. Great for surf-and-chill digital nomads; coastal riad hostels for $16–22.
When to go
- October–April: peak. Consistent 4–8ft groundswell. Taghazout fills up.
- May–September: smaller, inconsistent. Fine for beginners. Lineups empty.
- Best value: late October and March — waves of the year, shoulder prices.
Surf camps vs independent
A full surf camp (7 nights, half-board, 3 surf sessions/day, board rental) runs $450–700. Independent: dorm $12 + board rental $10/day + van $3/session = ~$200/week. Camp if you want lessons and a group; independent if you can already paddle out safely.
Gear rental
- Shortboard: $10/day, $60/week
- Softboard for beginners: $8/day
- 3/2mm wetsuit: $5/day (needed Nov–April), trunks fine May–October
- Leash and wax: included
Beyond the main spots
The coast north of Taghazout (Boilers, Tamri) and the less-talked-about breaks around Sidi Ifni are where the locals go when the hubs get busy. Rent a car for $25/day and an ISA-certified guide for a day ($80) if you want a proper empty-wave hunt.
Morocco surf is accessible, affordable and the lineups are still friendly. Respect locals, don’t drop in on Anchor regulars, and you’ll be welcome.
